Earwax is made of secretions from cerumen and sebaceous glands under the skin. It mixes with dead skin cells as it migrates to the outer opening, and its function oddly enough, is to clean the ear canal, protect the ear drum from infection,  and also from foreign bodies such as insects that may fly in! Most of the time, once it gets near to the outer end of the ear canal, it dries up and falls out without us really knowing when it does.  However, sometimes our ears can feel a bit itchy, and  typically many of us use cotton buds to try and clear out the wax or satisfy that itch. It's a habit the many people have picked but what actually happens is that some of the wax comes out, and the rest gets pushed further along the ear canal, where it can not be retrieved with a cotton bud, and the wax becomes more compact.
